A Lifetime Dedicated to Global Transformation
Distinguished economist, diplomat, and spiritual leader who has spent over four decades reshaping how the world approaches development, peace, and human dignity.
Born in Chile. Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Twenty-nine years at the World Bank and United Nations. The first Environmental Economist at the World Bank. Pioneer of rights-based development. Founder of the Zambuling Institute for Human Transformation.
Dr. Sfeir-Younis is recognized globally as a pioneer who integrated environmental economics into mainstream development policy when sustainability was still a marginal concern. As the World Bank’s first Environmental Economist, he established frameworks that are now standard practice across international financial institutions.
His work transcends economics. Dr. Sfeir-Younis was the first to systematically link international finance with economic, social, and cultural rights (ESCR), fundamentally changing how development is understood—not just as GDP growth, but as the expansion of human capabilities and freedoms.
For more than two decades, he has pioneered the integration of Buddhist philosophy and indigenous wisdom into economic policy, founding the Zambuling Institute and the Latin American Network of Socially Engaged Buddhism (LANSEB).

Overview
Dr. Alfredo Sfeir-Younis represents a unique convergence in human history: a World Bank economist who became a Buddhist teacher, an environmental pioneer who recognized spiritual transformation as prerequisite for systemic change, and a development practitioner who demonstrated that consciousness and compassion must guide economic policy. Over five decades, his work has evolved from reforming international financial institutions from within to building global movements for planetary consciousness.
His journey spans three distinct but interconnected phases: The Economist (1976-2002), when he transformed the World Bank’s approach to development by integrating environmental safeguards, human rights frameworks, and sustainability principles into global finance; The Activist (2002-2015), when he founded spiritual institutions, ran presidential and senatorial campaigns in Chile, and challenged the systems he once operated within; and The Teacher (2015-present), when he has trained thousands worldwide in planetary consciousness while producing his most systematic works on Buddhist Social Doctrine, ecological civilization, and collective human transformation.
From establishing the World Bank’s first comprehensive environmental and social safeguards to founding the Zambuling Institute for Human Transformation, from integrating Economic, Social and Cultural Rights into development frameworks to articulating Buddhist economics as viable alternative to capitalism, from defending Chilean rivers against extractive industries to receiving the Eirene Award from the World Peace Organization—his life demonstrates that healing ourselves and healing the planet are inseparable.
This body of work spans 21 interconnected thematic areas and over 250 publications, representing one of the most comprehensive attempts in modern times to bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary crises. His work shows that planetary survival requires simultaneous transformation of economic systems, political structures, ecological relationships, and human consciousness itself.
