The Planetary Crisis
Overview
Humanity lives in a planetary society for the first time in history, but we still do not have a planetary being
Dr. Sfeir-Younis’s work on the planetary crisis transcends climate science to address what he calls the “inner warming” driving ecological collapse. His 2005 recognition that “Humanity Has Another Option: Making Peace with the Environment” establishes the foundation: our relationship with Earth reflects our inner state—greed, fear, and disconnection manifest as extraction, pollution, and destruction. Healing the planet requires healing ourselves.
Through nearly two decades of increasingly urgent writings—from “Healing the Planet” (2007, 2010) to “We Are On Fire” (2023)—he documents humanity’s accelerating crisis while insisting transformation remains possible. His critique of COP25 exposed the irresponsibility of major polluters avoiding accountability, arguing that international climate negotiations without enforcement mechanisms and spiritual transformation are performative theater, not genuine crisis response.
His concept of “recalentamiento interior” (inner warming)—the parallel between global temperature rise and rising human consciousness heat from greed and aggression—shows ecological and spiritual crises as one phenomenon. His 2015 call to “Change the World Now” and 2023 desperate “How Long!” reflect both urgency and frustration: we know what must be done, we have the tools, yet political and economic systems block transformation while Earth burns.
